The Poteau River is a river in the U.S. states of Arkansas and Oklahoma. The only river in Oklahoma that flows north. Poteau is the French word for "post" and it is believed the river was named because French explorers used a post or stake to mark the mouth of the river.The city of Poteau, Oklahoma shares the name of the river. The Poteau River converges with the Arkansas River at Belle Point at Fort Smith, Arkansas, where it serves as a border between the two states for a short distance. The Poteau River arises in the Ouachita Mountains of western Arkansas, flows westward into Oklahoma, then flows north to join the Arkansas River at Fort Smith. The Poteau has a drainage area of 4895 km2. Comments: This is a fairly small river starting on the Forest that is floatable most of the year with large pools. By the time it gets into Oklahoma it is pretty good sized. It stays fairly murky. Most of it is on private land.
