Tri-county Lake Description

The Tri-County Lake in Fordyce was the first Game & Fish Commission Lake in Akansas. Covering 280 acres, the lake is a favorite spot for blue catfish, bluegill, channel catfish, crappie, largemouth bass, redear sunfish, and warmouth. The Game & Fish Commission maintains two concrete boat ramps at mid-lake on the north side. Several earthen fishing jetties are located just east of these ramps, and another concrete boat ramp is located at the dam’s south end. A primitive camping area is available on the lake’s south side, with additional primitive campsites and picnic facilities near the north side boat ramps. Fishing supplies, restaurants and lodging are available in Fordyce. Timber was harvested from the lakebed prior to construction, but innumerable stumps remain to provide a sportfishing haven. Most of the lake is shallow, but deep-water fish sanctuaries are found near the dam and along the old Caney Creek channel meandering southwest to northeast across the lake bottom. Anglers can bankfish from the north-shore fishing jetties, or fish from a boat, taking care to avoid the lake’s many underwater stumps. Excellent fishing for bream, bass, catfish and crappies is available on three nearby streams –the Saline River to the east and Champagnolle Creek and the Ouachita River to the west.
